Creating Better Performance through Education &
Merging the Gap Between Horsemanship and the Show Horse
"I probably learned more about training my horse at the clinic I attended than in my many years riding horses. Michael and Julia are gifted in their ability to communicate the philosophy and techniques of true horsemanship." - 2023 Winter Riding Series Clinic participant
"I've had the privilege of Michael's instruction twice. Once in a clinic and once in a private lesson on my reining horse. I have participated in several clinics and follow a number of natural horsemanship trainers for tips and insight. None of them come close to the insight and knowledge I received from Michael during my two lessons with him. What I appreciate most about Michael is that he takes the time to get to know you and your horse before he ever begins to give suggestions or instruction. No "one size fits all" for this guy! - Rhonda Van Huss
"Learned so much at my four day Michael Lyons horsemanship clinic. My Endurance mare Maggie was having trouble with her ‘power steering’. We worked hard through all of the exercises Michael gave us, especially the dreaded ‘shoulder’ exercises! I don’t even work that hard on a 50 miler I’m happy to report that all the sweat was so worth it, Maggie now has acquired Power Steering. We’re ready to hit the trail with confidence. Thanks again Michael"

How many Horses do you bring? With this being such an intense and longer program, you need to bring 2 horses. For several reasons, one being that each horse will need a break, but two being that they all learn differently and being able to learn techniques with multiple horses is a huge benefit.
It is important that you are able to ride/work in a group of people. This does not mean that you need to be perfect, as we understand that you probably signed up for this clinic because you are in need of help, but make sure you are are comfortable riding or doing ground work with your horse in a group of 6+ people.
Will we be riding everyday - We do ride, and/or work every day, This program consists of classroom time (learning about the horse, anatomy, equipment, management ect), ground work, and riding time. We do give one day off for rest in the middle of the program, but are working all day every other day.
What Horses Should you Bring - This is a great question that we get and really it depends on the level of rider you are. If you are a higher level rider who is confident and wanting to learn to get better at starting horses, then you can bring an unbroke. Keep in mind that YOU will be starting the horse under the guidance and teaching of Michael. So if you feel uncomfortable about putting the first ride on a horse, then you should not bring an unbroke. If you are wanting to get better at the fundamentals and don't have an interest at starting a horse at this moment, then any horse who is going along w/t/c in an arena will work. It is a benefit to you if you bring two horses at two different levels to learn in different areas and places of a horses journey. Your horse will go through the full fundamentals program that we offer, which is a lot of body control, softness to the reins & aids, relaxation work both under saddle and on the ground, and more.
Do I get a Certificate at the End? - Yes, for the Level 1 course you get a certification of completion for the course. Once moving to the next Levels, you will have to Pass the class in order to receive the Certificate.
Videos/Photos - Photos are meant to be used for your personal use only, not for commercial purposes or public viewing. You are not authorized to publish or display photos or videos that were taken of Michael & Julia Lyons, staff, family, or anyone else in the clinic without permission from Michael or Julia.
Stallions are not permitted in any clinic unless given permission from Michael or Julia directly.
Coggins- You do need a valid coggins to bring your horse to the facility.
Stalls & Cabins - Cabins are available to rent onsite at Michael Lyons Horsemanship. Each cabin has 2 queen beds, a bathroom, shower, and small kitchenette with a mini fridge, toaster oven, coffee pot and microwave. Cabins are available for $750 for your entire stay. You can share a cabin with another participant and split the cost, or rent your own. Stall are included in your tuition, shavings are not.
